Frederick  Douglass was born into slavery. He ran away from slavery and decided to become a leader against slavery. Frederick Douglass is important to America because unlike most slaves, he makes it out of slavery, is able to tell him story and become an agent in the black community. Douglass was a firm believer in the equality of all people whether black, female, Native American, or immigrants.famously quoted as saying, "I would unite with anybody to do right and with nobody to do wrong
